Summary of DTR workshop – Bringing Computational Science and Cancer Research Together

This workshop brought together researchers from across computational science, imaging and clinical disciplines to showcase how emerging technologies are being applied to cancer research and to encourage collaboration. Presentations highlighted the growing role of AI in medical imaging, particularly in supporting clinicians by improving transparency and trust in decision-making, alongside advances in MRI and imaging techniques to better characterise tumours and predict outcomes. Wider discussions explored human-centred AI approaches, including digital twins for personalised treatment and the importance of usability, ethics and data quality in healthcare applications. The session also emphasised practical ways to build collaborations, such as student projects, internships, and research networks, and identified a clear need for stronger local connections in areas like bioinformatics and data analysis to retain expertise within Cardiff and Wales.
If you couldn’t join us, or would like to revisit the key points, the slides from the workshop are available for you to explore here.
We look forward to seeing you at our next workshop (date TBC).
