Dr Paul Shaw

Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Velindre Cancer Service specialising in lung cancer

Dr Shaw graduated from Liverpool University Medical School and has worked in England and Wales having completed specialist training in both Palliative Medicine at the Oxford Deanery and Clinical Oncology in Wales. His PhD was supervised by Professor Alan Clarke in the European Cancer Stem Cell Institute, where he gained expertise in murine models of cancer and therapeutics.

Paul sub-specialised in the management of thoracic malignancy and holds Honorary Senior Lecturer status at the School of Biosciences, Cardiff University. He continues to support PhD and MD students at Cardiff University.

As an active Principal Investigator for numerous commercial and investigator-led studies, Paul leads Velindre’s lung trial portfolio and the drug-radiotherapy workstream within the Early Phase Trials Unit. He is National Chief Investigator on two current studies sponsored by BioNTech and AbbVie. Paul is also a co-investigator and study arm lead for the early phase CONCORDE trial, a high-profile UK platform study funded by Cancer Research UK with separate industry support from AstraZeneca. Other roles include Chief Scientific Officer for the HIT-Meso proton beam study in pleural mesothelioma with colleagues from the proton facility at UCL, London.
