Professor Jones obtained a PhD in Cancer Research before studying Medicine at Oxford University. Having completed Medical Oncology training in Glasgow, he carried out a CRUK Clinician Scientist fellowship before being appointed as Senior Lecturer in Medical Oncology at Cardiff University.

Rob is Chief Investigator on two investigator-led national portfolio trials, FAKTION and FURVA. FURVA was reported orally at the European Society of Medical Oncology meeting (2020) and FAKTION orally at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Chicago 2019, and 2022). FAKTION demonstrated a doubling of overall survival time of patients with metastatic breast cancer and made a critical contribution to the FDA approval of Truqap, a first-in-class AKT inhibitor for its first licenced clinical indication.

Rob set up Wales’s only Cancer Phase 1 Trials Unit which now has a team of around 20 staff. He opened and lead on global recruitment for its first ever first-in-human trial and has been Principal Investigator of around 50 early phase trials.
