Professor Westwell obtained his PhD in Chemical Synthesis at the University of Leeds and following postdoctoral research at Loughborough University, he became a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham, undertaking research in preclinical cancer drug discovery leading to the identification of a new clinical candidate drug.

At Cardiff University, Andrew has continued his work on the discovery of new anticancer drug candidates targeting advanced and resistant disease. His collaborative work with industry partners focuses on the discovery and pre-clinical development of new anticancer drug candidates targeting advanced and metastatic disease, the cause of death in more than 90% of cancer patients.

Andrew’s research achievements are documented in more than 170 international journal publications and 5 international patent filings during his career. He is also an Independent Board Member at Velindre University NHS Trust, chairing the RD&I Trust Board Sub-Committee, and was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in 2024. He is also a founder member of the WEDINOS drug detection and harm reduction group in Wales, where he chairs the programme advisory board.
